Pumpkin Carving
The fall breeze makes leaves and little boys shiver at night. The glory of our garden has been reduced to frosted heaps of leaves and rotting pulpy fruit. This is the season for carving pumpkins.
As most little boys do, Ammon has developed a fascination for snakes, Spiders, and all creepy crawly slithering things. Because Jarom was preoccupied with throwing old apples at our neighbor's dog, and Elias was perfectly content with putting leaves and pumpkin pieces in his mouth, my brother and I decided to carve whatever Ammon wanted.
My brother Jake carved a hebi (snake) in his pumpkin, and I made a spider out of mine.
Monica, in homage to all the delicate things which fall by the wayside as the harshness of winter approaches, carved a butterfly into her pumpkin. As my sister's name implies, Summer is connected to the seasons, and this may have lead her to carve the harvest moon in her pumpkin. Summer's husband Rob payed his respects to the King of Halloween, Jack Skellington with his pumpkin.
After cleaning the stringy orange pulp off our hands, we came in for a plate of grinning Oreos and bowls of frighteningly minty ice cream.
